`Penny Mitchell vs. Velvet McIntyre!'

Who Will Face Moolah?

Fabulous One Awaits Winner of This Savage Brawl

Velvet McIntyre and  Penny Mitchell once reigned together as NWA tag-team champions, but now they'r wrestling against each other for a shot at the singles title.

The Fabulous Moolah had been the ladies champ for decades (she literally owned the belt), when the WWF hired her to bring some life to the women's game.

And it worked! Moolah's "Rock 'n' Wrestling" rivalry with Wendi Richter -- managed by Cindy Lauper -- was a pop phenomenon. But then came the "Original Screwjob," Wendi left the WWF, and Moolah needed a new rival.

So, on July 24, 1986, in beautiful Poughkeepsie, New York, Velvet and Penny met as the top two challengers. The winner would face Moolah.

Velvet, barefoot and high-flying, was a long-time WWF tag-team champ with Princess Victoria, playing fan-favorite "faces." She was known for her magnificent red hair, and an acrobatic style that anticipated today's game.

Big, tough Penny was mainly a "jobber" at this point -- a technically competant wrestler who's mostly
fodder for more high-profile opponents. She reveals herself early as the "heel," with frequent trips into Velvet's long hair -- bless her! -- and other unorthodox tactics.

But will it be enough to overcome Velvet's copious athletic and techincal skills?

Only a brutal fight, woman to woman, will decide...

One Woman Walks Out

`They can do it any way you want. You want to mix it up, you want a wrestling match, or you want a Pier 6 brawl." -- Gorilla Monsoon
The bell rings, and the two women come together, under the watchful eyes
of referee Dick Kroll, announcer Gorilla Monsoon, and an excited crowd!
Velvet goes for the classic lock-up, but Penny has other ideas,
burying her knee in Velvet's mid-section.
Velvet crumples to the mat! But Penny knows how to get a girl up on her feet...
...and how to send her crashing back to the canvas!
At this point the referee takes a moment to warn Penny about the hair-pulling, tugging at his own balding pate for emphasis. Penny ignores him.
Instead, Penny siezes two handfuls of hair...
...stands Velvet up on her tippy toes...
...and slams her face first into the mat!
`Look at that move by Penny! ...
`...That'll give you a negative attitude forever.'
Penny gets Velvet to her feet in the usual way...
...and then, fittingly, sends Ireland-born McIntyre across the ring with an Irish whip!
Velvet goes flying, only to hit the far ropes...
...and come bouncing back into Penny's flying elbow!
BOOM!
Velvet hits the mat hard, and appears in no rush to get up.
Penny eyes her fallen foe, planning her next move...
She goes for the cover!
Penny throws herself across Velvet, chest to chest, as the ref gets in position.
But before he can make a count, Kroll has girl trouble...
...as Velvet kicks out. No pin!

A Turn to the Barbarous

Penny thought she had the pin, but obviously underestimated Velvet.
More punishment will be necessary, she decides.
And all that red hair, just hanging there ... it's too much too resist!
GRAB!
Penny hauls Velvet to her feet...
...digs her hands deep into that red hair...
...and, like a madwoman, tries to rip it right out of Velvet's head!
She finally flings Velvet across the ring by the hair!
`Velvet, with all that flowing red hair ... it must be hard to keep your hands out of it!'
We couldn't agree more with you, Gorilla!

When Girls Go Flying

Penny has served notice that she intends to win this match, and will use whatever tactics it takes. Now she moves in for more...
Again she drags Velvet up by the hair, and goes for another Irish whip!
Velvet hits the ropes and is catapulted back at Penny -- but she ducks the chop!
Much to Penny's amazement, Velvet keeps running, bounces off the far ropes...
...leap-frogs Penny...
...hits the ropes yet again, jumps, and mounts Penny!
It's a monkey flip!
BOOM!
Velvet jumps quickly to her feet, and takes a running leap at Penny...
...only to see Penny do the ducking this time.
CRASH!
Penny has bad intent on her mind as she approaches the fallen Velvet.
Penny goes back into the hair...
...putting Velvet into a reverse headlock -- and yanking those locks behind her back!
But Penny has something more serious in mind than hair-pulling. Gathering in all her strength, with one mighty thrust, she hoists Velvet off the ground....
...and up into the air! It's a suplex!
And down comes Velvet, the whole front of her body exposed!
CRACK!
Velvet hits and bounces off the canvas...
...finally clattering to a stop.
This time Velvet is finished, Penny decides, and she goes for the pin!
The ref raises his hand for the count...
...but then up goes Velvet!
She bridges out! No pin!
Penny has one response to that!
WHOMP!
She tries another pin, but Velvet kicks out!
A frustrated Penny feels Velvet isn't cooperating...

Reversal of Fortune

Penny's first on her feet, and looking to capitalize on her advantage.
As Velvet seeks the safety of the ropes, Penny has a better plan...
....choking Velvet across the rope!
Velvet is gasping for breath as the ref finally breaks it up!
Velvet's hair hangs down in dreamy waves...
...as Penny puts the boot to her!
Velvet struggles to her feet, as Penny moves in...
This time Velvet is ready, and she sinks a right hand deep into Penny's stomach!
Then Velvet goes for a classic two-legged take down...
...and turns it into a flipover-backbridge-pin attempt!
How gorgeous is that?
But Penny kicks out!
No pin!
And still, the battle rages on...

Hare Mare, Queen of Wrestling Moves

Even after a flurry of offensive moves, it's obvious Velvet has taken the worst
of this fight. And Penny isn't finished...
Again she gathers up Velvet's abundant locks...
...and goes for perhaps the most iconic move in women's wrestling...
...the hair mare!
WHAM!
Few wrestlers were hair-mared as often as Velvet, for obvious reasons.
Now Penny jumps...
...and lands with her knee flush across Velvet's chest!
Penny goes for the pin!
The ref counts one!
But Velvet isn't finished, and she looks to...
...kick out!
No pin.

Breaking Out the Big Guns

Velvet avoids the pin, but she's still stunned from the mare. And here comes Penny...
...and there she goes after Velvet's hair again!
Penny drags Velvet to her feet...
...and takes aim with a big right!
SMACK!
Penny again leaps high...
SPLAT!
She lands on her wallet, as Velvet gets out of the way at the last second!
From the roots of the hair to the derriere, both women are in pain...
...and they're both slow to get up, as the damage is taking its toll.
Finally they get to their feet, and face off once more.
But this time Penny walks into a haymaker from Velvet!
POW!
And Velvet with another right-hand shot!
Velvet follows Penny into the corner, then tosses her out with an arm-drag.
Penny hits hard and clatters across the mat.
And goes for her signature move, the flying drop-kick!
And down goes Penny!
The first one worked so well...
...Velvet goes for another!
Penny staggers like a drunk, as Velvet charges!
But what is this? Velvet does a 180 in the air, locks her legs around
Penny's waist, then rolls forward...
...flipping Penny violently to the mat. It's a modified Victory Roll,
a pinning combination!
The ref moves in the for the count...
But Penny kicks out!
No pin! And Dick Kroll takes some collateral damage...

Swing Out, Sister!

"Sorry, Dick," says Velvet. "I enjoy it! Any time," he replies.
Velvet ignores the old lech and goes back to work.
It's Penny turn to get pulled up by the hair...
...and Irish whipped into the ropes!
Velvet greets her return with a shoulder block!
Penny hits and bounces!
THUD!
Did anyone get the number of that truck, Penny wonders...
...before she collapses to the mat. Velvet moves in!
Again she goes for an elaborate move, grabbing both of Penny's legs...
...and pulling her up into pinning position! The ref goes for the count...
...but Velvet has something else in mind. The Giant Swing!
Look out, Dick! Around and around...
...Penny goes...
...where she'll land...
...only Velvet knows!
...Penny goes...
THUMP!
Uh-oh, Velvet's gone dizzy with all that spinning, and heads for the ropes!
They look like a couple of cruise-ship passengers who've had enough of the ocean!
Velvet gets her sea legs first...
...and goes for the Big Splash!
CRASH!
Velvet hits the mat flush, as Penny rolls out of harm's way...
...and it's back to cruise-ship mode...

Velvet's Hair: An Appreciation

True or not, the idea of the "fiery redhead" is firmly embedded in our culture...
...and the WWF played this to the hilt with Velvet McIntyre.
An Irish(-Canadian) lass with gorgeous red hair...
...Velvet always wore it long...
...the better for her opponents to use it against her...
...as Penny has so effectively done here!
But however much punishment Velvet might absorbe...
...she's a fiery redhead!
And she only gets madder!

Appreciate This!

Brunettes don't give up easy, either...
...and Penny shows us what she thinks of our tribute to Velvet's hair!
Another Irish whip!
But instead of bouncing off the ropes, Velvet climbs them!
And launches herself at Penny...
...who ducks. SPLAT!
Between the two missed leaps and the suplex, Velvett's soft, white underbelly
has taken a beating...
...and Penny looks intent on continuing that beating!
She's still pissed about the hair appreciation...
...and casualy, painfully, drags Velvet up.
"Look how bald I am by comparison," Dick Kroll seems to say.
Back to County Cork once more...
...but Velvet reverses it!
She follows Penny into the ropes...
...bounces off...
...and throws herself back...
...into a breathtaking Backbridge Pin!
Dick's in position, so to speak...
..but even as he counts one, Penny manages to break Velvet's hold.
No pin!
Now it looks like Velvet is aiming for the poor guy!

`Very Unorthodox Move'

We feel the fiery redhead's ire rising...
...and Penny notices, too.
Velvet shows she can yank the hair with the best of them...
...pulling Penny to her feet...
...and setting her up for a standing drop-kick!
THUMP!
Both ladies hit hard, but Velvet manages to crawl over to Penny...
...and she covers her! Dick with the count...
Penny kicks out! No pin.
Velvet looks to her next move...
...when Penny goes for the eye-gouge!
Jeeper creepers, Velvet screams as Penny digs her fingers into her peepers!
`Some very unorthodox tactics by Penny'
Two girls down.

Victory From on High

Wrestling's a test of strength, skill, and viciousness, but also of stamina.
Velvet and Penny are both exhausted. They've pummeled each other continuously...
...and whichever can land the last blow, may be the winner...
...and Penny wills herself up first!
And we know exactly where she's going!
Yet again she hauls Velvet up by the hair...
...this time slipping an arm between Velvet's legs, and scooping her
up for a body slam!
But Velvet reverses it, and it is she who slams Penny!
It's a pin count! One!
Two!
Thr...
Penny kicks out! No pin.
Oh, to have Velvet draped over us like that!
Penny doesn't enjoy it, though, and the two women get ready to go at it again...
But it's Velvet who lands a big right hand!
The redhead lets loose with a primal scream, and looks to go in for more.
Grabbing a fistful of Penny's hair, she pulls her in for a forearm shivver to the back!
And once more for the Emerald Isle, Velvet goes for the Irish whip...
...only to have Penny reverse it!
Again, Velvet goes a'climbing!
The fiery redhead's hair truly looks to be aflame...
...as she mounts Penny!
This time Velvet goes for the full Victory Role!
BOOM!
Velvet hooks Penny's legs, and the ref starts his count...
Two!
One!
Three!
It's a pin! Velvet wins!
Velvet celebrates as Velvet's parents and a couple of stoners cheer her on!
A hard-fought victory for Velvet, but amid the joy, she can think of just one thing...

MOOLAH
IS WAITING!
